Variety is “the spice of life,” but did you know that it can also help your workouts to maximize weight loss success and fitness gains?

Whether you’re looking to build muscle, gain strength, increase cardiovascular health, burn fat or lose weight, changing up your workouts (sometimes called “cross-training”) can make a huge difference.

Avoiding Monotony

All too many people trying to lose weight fall into the trap of just cutting calories and doing more cardio. While this may certainly work in the short term, these people often find themselves quickly falling into a rut; they report feeling hungry, bored and at a plateau in their weight loss efforts.

The body is very adaptable and will adjust pretty quickly to a workout regimen. Doing the same workout week after week allows your body to completely adjust to it, and after a short while, gains diminish.

Train Creatively and Stay Stimulated

By contrast, variety in training is a catalyst for burning fat, losing weight and increasing fitness. Whether it’s by rotating different workouts throughout the week, changing your routine entirely every few weeks, or making changes within a workout, variety in training stimulates a more comprehensive effect. The body is stimulated to use more energy while adapting to new challenges, burning more calories and fat in the process.

Ideally, you should never go more than three to four weeks using a single training regimen. One approach is to rotate different types of workouts throughout the week; alternate cardio sessions with weight training and interval training — or do half and half at each workout. For cardio sessions, consider rotating among the treadmill, stationery bike and stairmaster. Mix in a long hike outdoors, rock climbing, tennis or other alternate activities from time to time. Doing so will keep your body on its toes and alleviate training boredom.

Keeping it Fresh

You can also add variety within a workout; if you work out for 45 minutes, do fifteen minutes of treadmill, ten minutes of stationery bike, and twenty minutes of circuit training. Change the ratio from time to time, or change your technique for some exercises. Variety IS the spice of life, so experiment, have fun, and enjoy the rewards.
