Whether you’re trying to get in shape before beach season or just want to start eating healthier, it’s important to watch what you snack on during the day. Winter is typically a time when people indulge in comfort foods that are filled with calories and unhealthy ingredients. Instead of reaching for one of these, consider having one or more of the following nutritious winter snacks.

Baked Sweet Potatoes

If you usually snack on potato chips or French fries, substitute these unhealthy treats with some sweet potatoes instead. Sweet potatoes have high amounts of important nutrients, such as beta-carotene and fiber, as well as vitamin C and calcium. Just heat up sweet potatoes the same way you would make baked potatoes, and then sprinkle them with cinnamon for added flavor. You can also cut them up and bake sweet potato fries.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal might seem like a breakfast food, but it also makes a great snack choice in winter. This healthy snack contains a lot of fiber that can help reduce cholesterol levels. You can make your own from steel-cut oats or have some instant oatmeal if you’re in a rush. If you do have instant oatmeal, choose one that’s low in sugar. Whether you’re having instant or homemade oatmeal, make it even more nutritious by adding blueberries or banana slices to it.

Cinnamon Apples

Apples are a highly nutritious snack that provides you with plenty of fiber and vitamin C. To give plain apples some spice for the winter season, cut them into slices and place them in a mug with about a teaspoon of water. Sprinkle some cinnamon on them, and then heat them up for roughly 45 seconds. You’ll have a warm, sweet and healthy treat to snack on after a workout or as an afternoon pick-me-up.
